BTM reviewed

The following review appeared in the Daily Telegraph newspaper in the UK on Saturday April 23:
When the evening winds down and everyone heads off to Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant’s delightfully furnished loft-spaces, it’s not just fruity electronic tunes playing on the stereo. Oh no. The urbane pop maestros, who once voiced a fancy for “Che Guevera and Debussy to a disco beat”, draw their pleasures from vigorously eclectic sources.

This 20th instalment in DMC’s series of artist-selected compilations is a sumptuous, double-disc treat. Chris Lowe’s “songs about love, friendship, sex, religion, hope and despair” include the Italo-disco floor-filler Take a Chance by Mr Flagio, gospel-funk from Philadelphia’s Celestial Choir, and Queen’s gargantuan The Show Must Go On.

Neil Tennant’s second disc is for “late-night listening”. This means lots of instrumental classical pieces, a dash of in-demand orchestrator Craig Armstrong (Laura’s Theme), an introduction to quirky ambient-synth experimentalist Video Kid (Video Kid), and lots of important-sounding Russian and German names. Meanwhile PSB’s beloved Dusty Springfield pops up on both discs, her heart bleeding all over I’d Rather Leave While I’m In Love and Goin’ Back. Enlightening and invigorating, just like one of the duo’s great singles. The Boys done good. Craig McLean
