At the end of their live coverage of the England-Portugal game on Saturday when England lost and left the World Cup, the BBC played a montage of England’s key moments during the 2006 World Cup edited to a soundtrack of “Numb” by Pet Shop Boys. The match is estimated to have been watched by one of the biggest TV audiences of the year. The rather moving montage was later repeated on “Match of the Day”.
