On August 19th, Neil and Chris meet by chance in an electronics shop on the Kings Road. Realizing they have a common interest in dance music, they begin to write together. Initially they call themselves West End; later they come up with the name Pet Shop Boys, a name derived from some friends who work in a pet shop in Ealing. "We thought it sounded like an English rap group".
On This Day
The Pet Shop Boys complete their first U.S. concert tour with a performance in Boston.
They perform at the Grunspan Club in Hamburg, Germany, an appearance videotaped for subsequent airing on German and French television.
The Boys donate a unique 'cube jacket' worn by Chris during their Pandemonium Tour to be auctioned off to benefit Red Cross relief efforts in the wake of the recent devastating earthquake in Japan. Meanwhile, they decide they prefer Chris's mix of 'The Colour of a Man' to one that had been done later by Pete Gleadall.
They spend a second day in the studio working on the song 'Get It Online' and also begin work on another new track, 'Fluorescent' (at that time still bearing its original title, 'Fluorescence').
The Boys perform in Ventura, California.
